8 Bike Safety Tips for Ultimate Peace of Mind in the Saddle

May 24, 2022

Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned cyclist, you’ve probably come dangerously close to wiping out at least once. Or even worse—crashing (here at Spot, we know a thing or two about that). That’s why it's so important to understand safety precautions to avoid injury and make the most of your ride

Here are eight tips to help you stay safe and worry-free:

Check Your Bike

Before you hop in the saddle,  make sure your brakes and chain are in working order and that the tires are well-inflated. Adjust the seat height and make sure it’s locked to ensure a comfortable ride. While you’re in the saddle, your leg should be almost straight, with your foot flat on the lower pedal.

Protect Your Head

I know, I know. It’s obvious. But… wear a helmet! Head injuries are one of the most common bike-related injuries And wearing a properly fitting bike helmet can reduce the risk of a head injury by 85%. So do that precious head of yours a favor and strap one on!

See and Be Seen

What you wear can make a big difference. According to the American National Standards Institute, Inc., fluorescent yellow-green, fluorescent orange-red, and fluorescent red are the most visible combinations of clothing colors that’ll help you be seen by drivers, fellow riders, and pedestrians.

Choose Your Headphones Wisely

Sure, listening to music or podcasts can make your ride more fun. But it’s probably not worth the risk, so consider leaving your headphones at home (besides—do you really want to replace your AirPods if disaster strikes?). If you do decide to tune in to your latest podcast, try using just one earbud or keep the volume low so you can still hear what's going on around you. And stay away from noise-canceling headphones. For obvious reasons.

Stay Aware

Stay alert, keep your head up, and look around. This can help you avoid crashing into car doors, your neighbor’s cat, and other potential hazards. And it should go without saying, but save that facetime, text, or breakfast taco for when your feet are planted safely on the ground.

Be Cautious at Intersections

It’s no surprise that nearly half of all bike crashes occur at intersections. So obey traffic signals and scan for traffic around you. Before making a turn, always look behind you for a break in traffic, then signal and position yourself in the proper lane.

Respect Road Rules

Get familiar with your local traffic laws; bicyclists often follow the same rules as motorists on the road. It’s your responsibility to obey traffic signals and stop signs. Always ride with traffic and use the rightmost lane headed in the direction you’re going. Use hand signals anytime you’re turning and check behind you before turning or changing lanes.
